Or did other parts of speech (pronouns, demonstratives) serve a similar purpose due to the lack of definite and indefinite articles in Latin?

  1. No, however the demonstratives ille, illa, illud (that) evolved directly into the definite articles of today's Romance languages, and the words for "one" - unus, una, unum - became the indefinite articles.
