Did London have paved streets in 1872? ?

  2. Look for old pictures of London.  There were paved streets.  

    There were paved streets here in the colonies in the cities at that time.  Doubtless London also had streets that were paved, also.

    The streets here were paved with cobblestones, not with the asphalt in use now.

  3. Pavements (or sidewalks if you're from the US) existed at that time in London, especially in the more upmarket areas such as Mayfair; no doubt it would have included the road itself too. I know that Haymarket, the thoroughfare from Piccadilly to Trafalgar Square, was paved in 1692 because a tax was levied on the those selling at the market there to pay for it's paving.

    Certain areas of the East End and other poor neighbourhoods would have been a bit mix and match depending on how often they were used, although by 1888 they were certainly many as can be seen by the reports regarding Jack the Ripper.
