Question:

Did Manny Pacquiao win by TKO over Diaz?

In round 9, Pacquiao knocked out Diaz. The Pay Per View airing showed Pacquiao is the winner by "TKO" briefly afterwards. Why was it TKO instead of KO? I didn't even see the ref do a countdown on Diaz. Did the ref even count?

  1. The only time a fight is ruled a KO is if the referee starts counting and the fighter does not get up by the count of 10.  If there is no count, like in the case of Pacquiao-Diaz and the ref waives it off, then it ruled a TKO.  The reason why the ref did not do a count is because he felt that Diaz was in no shape to continue and therefore he rightfully stopped the fight giving Pacquiao a TKO victory.  If he had given a count and Diaz didn't get up by 10, then it would be a KO victory for Pacquiao.  Either way,it still counts as another knockout on Manny's record.  His record is now 47-3-2, 36 KOs, and it used to be 46-3-2, 35 KOs.

  2. Referee did not count because Diaz is already unconscious and looks like seriously injured, so he called a doctor instead.

Even Manny was concerned so he approached his fallen rival.

  3. No, it shouldn't have been a KO, and was rightly called a TKO...the ref didn't do a count, and right around the time of the knockdown, he was looking for a reason to stop the fight.  Diaz was being hit a lot and was on real shaky legs, but he did punch back, so he was allowed to continue.  When Pacquiao hit him with that left and he first hit Manny's knee and then bounced off the canvas with his face, he was done!  A true KO is when the ref reaches the count of 10, but it was stopped without a count...thus, you have a TKO.
