Did Matthew, Mark, Luke and John really write their gospels?

Some versions of the Bible say "The Gospel According to Matthew," or "The Gospel According to Mark," etc. Doesn't that mean someone else wrote it?

  1. If I said "The Gospel According to Dominic." Then that means that this is my way of telling a divine story. All the "The Gospel According to.." means is that he wrote the gospel; so this story is according to him.

  2. Seems pretty clear to me.....

  3. no it means that its each of their points of view on what they saw... (except Luke, his version of the Gospel was made by interviewing people who had seen Jesus)

  4. Most of the writing was done way after everyone was dead.  The early church assigned names to writings to give validity to the gospels; no one knows who wrote them.

  5. Would they all have been literate?  Doesn't seem likely for the times, but I could be wrong.

  6. The titles actually came later, but the Gospels were named according to who actually wrote them: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John respectively.  The rest of the New Testament authors starting with acts are as follows: Acts - Luke, Romans through Hebrews - Paul, James through Jude all by their namesakes, Revelation - John.  Some of Paul's letters were dictated.  I hope this helps.

  7. They wrote it with the help of the Holy Spirit.  Yes, they all did.  Luke wrote his from listening to others.  He was a physcian, and was not there as a disciple.

  8. No, it just means it's their versions of the "good news".

It's quite possible the actual gospels were written by a person or persons from the communities of the apostles you name.  No matter, they contain the accurate teachings of the apostles, although some of the details may be a bit off.  None of the important teachings in the four gospels are in conflict with each other.

  9. Matthew, Luke and John did...but most scholars think that the book of Mark was written by Peter. God Bless

  10. God actually wrote them, but through men's hands.  Each was the author.

Matthew was written to a Hebrew audience

Mark was written to a Roman audience

Luke was written to a Greek audience

John was written to a universal audience

Remember, someone wrote "Gosple according to"  It was not there.

  11. No. Not someone else.

It means that the person named is the person who wrote it.

It is a literal translation of a Greek idiom.

So the Gospel according to Mark was written by Mark.

  12. Exactly right. So ur looking at it from their prospective and not the overall.

  13. i think they were written something like 200 years after the events took place. and if i'm correct, John was written first and the 3 others were based on it and each other.

  14. Whether they wrote it or spoke it to a scribe doesnt really make any difference. The important thing is that all four Gospels are obviously written by different people, at different times in history in different places in the middle east, yet they all tell the exact same story in complete harmony, if that isn't God inspired I dont know what is.
