Question:

Did Mayweather beat Hatton at his own game?

It seemed to me that Floyd was beating Ricky on the inside which is Hattons specialty. I didnt realize how good mayweather is at fighting in the pocket. Is there any other fight where he fought well on the inside?

  1. Mayweather beats everyone at their own game. A great fighter is great because they can control the pace of a fight no matter who they are in with. All the greats had that one thing in common and thats why PBF one plain and simple.

He makes you fight his fight, and to be perfectly honest, Ricky is not better than PBF in any aspect of boxing. So it was no surprise how the fight worked out. The check punch that Mayweather landed to end the fight was not by mistake in anyway. He practiced that punch over and over because anyone who follows boxing knows Ricky likes to lunge in with his left hooks. He never even saw it coming. PBF is a work of art in the ring, what he does in there is beyond amazing.

PBF can fight outside or inside. Hes fast, and extremely accurate. His defense is probably the best ever. He makes few mistakes and fighting someone like Ricky who throws so many left hooks had no chance. Ask yourself this, whens the last time we saw anyone land a left hook flush on mayweather?

  2. Pablo there are no excuses. The ref was keep it from becoming a street fight. Hatton was holding the ropes and the had to tell him to keep it off the ropes. People have to understand, Mayweather is a smart inside fighter. He starts out with a uppercut on the inside follow with combos of hooks. After that, he goes in to his shell defense, which is hard to get clean shots. Are some time he gets out. Hatton likes to hold and hit, and wrestle his opponents. Hatton just then come threw, what people was waint for. A Mayweather lost.

  3. No, Floyd is a lot more than that, Hatton was just overrated, his skills were just far behind Maweather, Floyd beat Hatton on just about everything not on just inside, flush shots from a distance by Floyd was just so pretty to look at.

  4. the ref didnt let hatton grab  and punch like he usually does as much as he wanted so nah i dont think so

  5. Mayweather beat Hatton with one very important element in boxing :  talent.

Hatton is a brawler.  A good brawler.  A brawler nonetheless.  Mayweather would KO Hatton 10 out of 10 times.

  6. chea mayweather can tear you up outside inside and anywhere else i watched his fight agains oscar de la hoya and he tore it up on the inside cause he couldnt let oscar get to far other wise he woulda destroyed floyed with his massive long range hits...also i watched him fight zab juda and he tore him up all over basically did anything he wanted to with him outside inside stand against the ropes...he is just an amazing fighter

  7. Somewhat he did. But on the other hand it wasn't even that complicated. What happen was he gave Ricky Hatton a boxing lesson. You saw that Mayweather is a great boxer, Hatton is a good boxer. He has been fighting a lot of B class opponents in England and he had never seen anything like Floyd Mayweather

before. I know a lot of Brits will disagree with me but that's the fact. Hatton beat a over the hill Kosta Tszyu which gave him a lot of false confidence. But Mayweather has unrivaled hand speed which gave Hatton big problems, remarkable defensive skills which gave him even bigger problems because he couldn't hit Floyd, and finally he has deadly counter punching which gave Hatton the biggest problem, it knocked him out with that left hook.  Mayweather is just in a class of his own right now and I don't see anybody in his era beating him.

  8. Somewhat, Hatton just had no answer for Floyds speed, i dont think anyone does

  9. Yes, you could say that.  But I also think Hatton beat himself at his own game as he tried to get too close.  Hatton basically smothered his own punches, which made it easy for Floyd to defend and counter with relative little worry of retaliation.  I think if Hatton were better schooled on how to infight without resorting to grabbing, holding and headbutting tactics, he would have forced Floyd to fight an outside game, similar to round 9 and 10.  Hatton was inexperienced and unskilled when it came to American style fighting.

  10. Mayweather beat Hatton at his own game: dirty fighting. I'm sure Hatton's camp did not think, MW could be such a nasty fighter. Ref Cortez seemed to be only concerned with Hatton in that regard, I didn't like that. But I don't think Hatton would have won had the ref been more balanced.

Additionally, when pressed against the ropes, MW stood at an almost 90 degree angle to Hatton, and when he use his shoulder roll defense, he "turned away", meaning he exposed his back to Hatton (which is illegal). That's why Hatton hit him on the back of the head twice. Frustration. I can partly understand that, but I was shocked at how little Hatton had to offer technically to counter MW tactics.

What really won MW the fight was his lightning fast hands. Coupled with Hatton's very sloppy defense it made him take too many punches.

  11. I don't think it's neccesarily that Mayweather beat Hatton at his own game. What happened was Mayweather is so athletic, that when he would go on the inside he would land his shots and get out. By comparison, Hatton was stagnant. It is his nature to go inside and grind in some hard punches, but apparently he was TOO methodical as the referee would often break them up when Hatton would pound the inside.

Given the circumstances, you could say if there was a different referee the outcome could have been different.

But with that being said, Mayweather was clearly the better boxer and deserved to win. Can't argue that.

  12. Yes simply he did, floyd i never thought he was a great fighter but he is a very good fighter, he showed more skill, before that fight he through one shot at a time and won, against hatton that wouldnt work, he adjusted and through some great combos out and set hatton up with his hand speed.  He never fought a guy that put pressure on him like ricky hatton, hatton is a good fighter, and he brought out the best in floyd.  Floyd in my mind is without a doubt the best p4p fighter, but if he would fight Cotto and win he would unanimously the best in everyones mind.  Granted hatton is a good fighter, but he has no jab, the way to beat floyd is with a jab like oscar except he didnt use it past the 7th, cotto has a great jab and i think cotto would put the best fight at mayweather, hes the hardest puncher mayweather ever faced, best at cutting off the ring, younger, stronger, and determined.  This would be the best fight to make in boxing.
