Did McCain pick Palin because she is so common, or in spite of that?

Sarah Palin is painfully common, I can't imagine her sitting down for a chat with (heiress) Cindy McCain or (Ivy League) Michelle Obama. Just look at her children's names!

Is this a cynical move by McCain to encourage working class white women to vote Republican against all their economic and personal interests?
