I am a jester tomorrow in a school project and my costume is all ready to go but I just started thinking that maybe jesters wore facepaint. Did Medieval jesters wear face paint? If so what kind (what did it look like)?

  1. No, they just wore funny clothes. They really didnt have face paint.

  2. Medieval jesters didn't wear face paint - you're thinking of clowns, but clowning is a different tradition altogether.

It's possible of course that a jester might have painted his face in order to perform a specific gag that required it. But no, it's not necessary and indeed not authentic for you to paint yours.

  3. Authentic court jesters often performed with little or no make-up at all. However, to make your school project more interesting, you could get the look of a court jester by painting a series of colored diamonds around the eye area. Apply paint to the top of one eye and around the bottom of the other eye to create a symmetrical look.
