Just wondering. I can't find any pet stores that sell dogs. Are any stores in the U.S.A. selling dogs anymore?

  1. Our PetSmart has dogs for adoption from local shelters.

  2. No I don't remember them ever selling animals. They have adoption days etc. where rescue groups bring dogs available for adoption in the store.

  3. pet smart didn't sell them. they held adopt-a-thons on weekends and still do for dogs from shelters

they sell small critters like hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, fish, etc. but cats and dogs are through an adopt-a thon at local shelters. They usually leave a few cats at the store for people to look at and come back weekends and see if anyone wants them. At least the Pet Smart here does.

  4. Yes there are stores that sell dogs still. Usually they are PUPPY MILL dogs. They are mass bred, sick, and never cared for. (Not to mention OVERPRICED).(Look up "puppy mills" in a search engine)

Shelters are a great place to find dogs that need homes. There are also breed specific rescues.

www.petfinder.com is a great resource. You can search your area for available dogs.

    There is also

    www.craigslist.com

    www.kijiji.com

    and your local paper

DOGS AREN'T HARD TO FIND YOU JUST ARE NOT LOOKING HARD ENOUGH

And no, petsmart has NEVER sold dogs.

  5. I don't think they ever didn't nor did petco to my knowledge. 8/

Do pet stores still sell puppies? yes I find its not so much the larger chain stores, but more so the smaller independent pet stores at least where I'm at.

  6. Sell dogs? No. Adopt out rescued dogs? Yes.

  7. find a respectable breeder or adopt from a rescue or shelter...pet store puppies are usually from puppy farms and can be sickly and cost alot in vet bills

  8. I don't know if Petsmart used to sell dogs, but I know that they currently do not. Instead, they let rescue groups come in on the weekends with dogs for adoption.

Yes, there are some petstores that still sell dogs. I know of several in my city.

But why are you looking for petstores that sell dogs?! Dogs in petstores are from puppymills, by buying them, you are supporting the puppymills.

Go to a reputable breeder if you want a puppy. Here's some information about telling the difference between good and bad breeders:

Another option is the animal shelter or http://www.petfinder.com/ .

  9. I hope not!(Though there are *plenty*)

Pet store puppies come from puppy mills!

Petsmart has never sold dogs. They get dogs/kittens from shelters and adopt them out.

  10. I don't know if PetsMart ever sold puppies but many pet stores still do.  Pet stores can make whopping profits off puppies.  First, the pups they pay $50 to $150 or so for are sold for about ten times that much or more.  Then, once someone buys a puppy, omigosh, you need food and bowls and this and that and isn't that cute...retail items are really pumped up in price, too.  And then the puppy buyers come back and back to buy food, toys and so on.  It's a little harder for them to make big bucks so easily if they don't sell live pets.

Didn't you hear about the big pet store that caters to  celebrities (and other dumb rich people), where the puppies are placed in human baby cribs to sell them?  Word got out (the truth, I mean) that all those grossly overpriced puppies were from puppy mills.

If you find a pet store that sells puppies, shop somewhere else.
