Question:

Did Queen Mary really do this?

It is roumoured that at the opening of the King George V Bridge, Glasgow in 1928, Queen Mary hit a disrespectful lady so hard with her parasol that she fell into the River Clyde.

Apparently the lady, possibly the wife of the Lord Provost, was lucky enough to be addressed by Her Majesty and got a bit above her station, waving her arms at the Queen in animated conversation. Anyone familliar with Queen Mary's formidable caracter will know that this disrespectful behaviour would be dealt with immediately in the best way she knew, which was to wield her parasol expertly and with brutal but exquisite style.

The only person allowed to mention the incident was the King, who loved to embellish such stories with comedy for everyone gathered around the Christmas tree at Sandringam House.

  1. Well it sounds like you need to ask the King.

Actually yes I heard this same story, however I am unsure if it is Rumor, Legend or fact.

  2. a lady *never* acknowledges an insult

  3. Knowing Queen Mary I would say it probably is lol Good question :-) makes a change from ''does he fancy me'' lol xx

  4. Royalty is a big PileofShit!

  5. I am pleased that Richard is able to confirm the story, I wonder if any others have heard this oft repeated tale? Anyone with knowledge  of Her Late Britannic Majesty, Queen Empress Mary, would recognise that a parasol would be quite unnecessary. A single glance from Her Beloved Majesty would have enough kinetic energy to hurl the female in question into the Clyde automatically!

    Lots of love

    MRI xx

  6. who gives a sh*t?

  7. I have no problem believing that - Mary was a terror.

Even the King was afraid of her.

  8. Mary of Teck wasn't a real queen, she just happened to marry George V. Not that I've ever heard anything about her being a "formidable character." If anything she sounds like she was a lovely kind lady to me.

And connor... beheading was more of a medieval thing than a 20th century thing.

  9. Nothings changed then

  10. people will be people.

  11. A myth I'm afraid.

  12. That is the story I hope she didn't

  13. I suppose that we should be thankful she didn't have the women imprisoned or beheaded!

  14. Royalty is a joke, they should all be de-throned.

  15. Yes, the dame was a thug boat

  16. I doubt that rumour is true. They teach future queens to be so formal and uptight that they can probably put a rock in their behind and turn it in diamond.

  17. I thought the queen mary was a boat

  18. never heard of this story - but now I'll never forget it either - lol
