Yes, it's a random question, but an interesting one.  The history of vending machines actually goes way back before the 1960's.  There were vending machine for chewing gum in the NY subways when they first opened more than 100 years ago.

In fact, according to Wikipedia, the very first vending machine goes all the way back to the first century A.D.  Who knew?
