  1. You might mean the footbridge in Bury on the Rochdale to Bolton line.

One september  saturday in 1954 the footbridge at Bury Knowlsley street station collapsed when football fans comming to watch Bury FC were crossing from the platform to the exit.

Too many fans were on one cast iron section of the bridge when it snapped due to being overloaded.

The station staff had kept people waiting on the footbridge to help keep the flow of people through the exits.

The then railway inspectorate investigated and found a cast iron support failed due to a combination of more than 70% overloading and an unseen manufacturing defect.

The wonder was'nt that the bridge failed....but that it had survived so long.

  2. There were rail accidents in Bolton in 1831, 1858, 1865 & 1886. In 1882 the Orlando Street Railway Bridge collapsed, killing one and wounding another.

Haven't found anything more recent, sorry. My Dad never mentioned it, and he was living there at the time.

  4. Check back thru Back Issues of Newspapers at your local Library. Also older folks might recall if they have lived there for a longtime. Historical Society another good idea.
