  1. You are totally wrong my friend , i remember the race , a horse aptly named Popham Down trained by Fluke Walwin refused at the fence that is now called the Foinaven fence. In the malee that followed most of the others were either brought down or just stopped in thier tracks  . Foinavan ridden by John Buckingham was well in arrears, but he came on the outside avoiding the pile up and went on to win.

  2. my mum had a bet on that horse.

  3. I can't understand why anyone posts a question then answers it themselves. I had actually heard about that race, even though it was before I was born. I wasn't sure of the horse's name though.

  4. Thank you for that video kmn!

  5. That's not entirely true.  It was in 1967 that Foinavon won the race.  And it wasn't that the leader went to the wrong fence.  It was actually that at the 23rd fence, there were two riderless horses in the lead and something happened that caused a huge pileup... all the horses stopped except for Foinavon... he was so far back that he could see and judge where to go so he swung out around all the crowd and jumped the outside of the fence and got a huge lead before the rest of the field untangled themselves and got racing again.  So he won easily because he got a huge head-start after that jump.  It's true though that some of the horses started running the wrong way after that pileup at that fence, but most of the field managed to continue in the correct direction.  here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAnNvNvgj...
