  1. The Equal Rights party nominated him to be the vice presidential candidate in 1872. He was running with Victoria Woodhill, the first woman nominee for President.

    The reason I'm pretty sure about this is because from what I can tell, Frederic Douglass was a very intelligent, sane person.

    To have even THOUGHT about running for president as a black man in THAT time period, he would have had to be quite looney. THere is NO way that a black man could have even come a LITTLE close to being considered a candidate.. Most were still slaves.. even almost a hundred years after slavery was abolished, African Americans did not have the same rights as whites...

    Thank God the times have changed.

    I don't know about whether Obama would make a good prez or not, But I'm thrilled that our country has ridded itself of racism to the extent that he has a chance!!
