I got a suspicious email today that claimed to be from the US embassy requesting my email, phone no and address in the event of an emergency.

  1. they wouldn't email you for a start.

  2. You get phishing emails from lots of places that *could* be useful to you- IRS has some money for you, a credit union is suspending your account, eBay says you owe for something you didn't bid on, stuff like that.  If it seems useful (maybe you're an ex-pat in England), then go to the appropriate site on your own. Never, never NEEE-EEEVER reply or respond to these emails.

FWIW- the Embassy's American Citizens Services section keeps tabs on Americans, if they register. If you're going to a place where you might land in trouble (your generic third-world country), it's always a good idea to tell them where you're going and when you'll be back.

I don't think England is a place where your welfare is in jeopardy at the hands of corrupt local officials, so I wouldn't think the Embassy should ask for your contact info.  This sounds bogus to me.  Still, you might phone the embassy and see what they tell you.

Check the link below for anything useful to you.

  3. If you're registered with the US embassy and are part of the warden system, you might very well get an email. If you  haven't done that and don't know what the devil I'm talking about, I'd ignore the email.  Or, if you're really curious, ask them.

  4. Be careful of bogus messages in order not to be victimized by syndicates searching for information.
