  1.   Yes, the USSR, in trying to keep up militarily and politically, ruined its economy and ended up breaking up into several states, after releasing Eastern Europe nations to go their own way.

  2. No , nobody did.

The Cold War was simply a period of tension and competition in everything between the US and USSR.

USSR sent the first man into space.

The Americans did their stuff too.

Nobody won. The tension simply ended. Formally. But the US and USSR still try to compete, I can tell you that.

  3. I would say America. Look at the USSR. It lost the war in Afghansitan and was then broken up. There were also many battles in the cold war such as Afghanistan and the Korean war. WHich America helped win and won.

  4. The US did, when Reagan met with Gorbachev at Reykjavik over "Star Wars", the Soviets were broke and wouldn't be able to come up with a missile defense system

  5. The "cold war" usually described the period after WW II when the two super powers, the US and the USSR, glared at each other and tried to figure out how to gain an advantage, even how to conquer the other.  Fortunately, and despite some hotheads on both sides, a thermonuclear war was avoided and the USSR collapsed because communism, at least as they applied it, is not a viable economic system.  So we won in the sense that they fell apart, like the Martians in War of the Worlds.  But the beat goes on - we humans are a greedy, savage and tribal bunch so there will always be people engaged in wars, either hot or cold.  And today there are greater complexities than in the cold war era of us and them.

  6. Well i see it as a "war" between the USA and the USSR

USSR leadership issues, and a failing economy led to the USSR's demise.

And seeing how the USA is still around and the USSR dissolved, i say USA won it lol.

  7. The world as a whole won (although the win turned out to be short-lived), because the effort that used to go into arms race was finally put to better uses.

The third world also won through a statistically significant reduction in the incidence of internal conflict (during the Cold War, both the USSR and the U.S. actively aided the efforts to topple the unfriendly governments).
