Did any type of tomato originate in italy?

  1. the tomato is originally from the New World, but after going to Europe new clones were developed.  The roma tomato that is commonly used in tomato paste is a good example.

  3. From Wiki it appears that tomatoes did not originate in Italy in any way, shape or form.  That is not to say that someone in Italy hasn't done a hybrid.

    The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a plant in the Solanaceae or nightshade family, as are its close cousins tobacco, chili peppers, potato, and eggplant. The tomato is native to Central, South, and southern North America from Mexico to Argentina.
