I am wondering if anyone here had their child tonsils taken out. I am trying to find out want I be expecting. My four year old son is having surgery this coming tuesday. He is getting his tonsils taken out. I found out today they keeping him overnight. My mom thinks they not going to keep him overnight. I told her want they said over the phone. Because I told her we need to take two cars since she was planning to come. But she doesn't believe me. I am wondering want I should be expecting. Is it common to keep an four year old overnight after taking tonsils out. How much pain can I expect him to be and how long he be in pain. I already have popsicles for him. Tylenol here for him has well. I know he want mommy. My mom thinks after surgery couple of hours so she think they would send him or something. And doctor had written down for 23 hour of watching him. The surgery time is 8:40 in the morning. 23 hour would be early next morning. Also want would be the best way to explain the surgery to my four year old. Thanks.

  1. Relax mom,the kid will be ok. Just make sure that they take out the adenois at the same time, give the kid lots of Jello and Ice Cream after the surgery.

  2. My son was kept overnight after his surgery because he has really bad asthma and sleep apnea (which was cured with the surgery).  He might be in a lot of pain for a couple of days and they give you tylenol with codeine for the first few days to get past the major part.  After that you have to continue to keep them calm for 2 weeks after the surgery they can't be running around all over the place.  My son was in pain but managed to eat a lot more than I thought he would so your son may surprise you.  They won't release him until he drinks what they want him too.  My son had his done at Children's hospital and they actually talked to him about the surgery son (he was 4 years old) and they gave me a booklet to read to him about a week before the surgery to help him understand some of what was going on.  He just needs to know that you will be with him until it is time to go back, they will make sure he doesn't feel any pain then when he wakes up the bad tonsils will be gone and he will be looked at to make sure everything is ok and that you will be there for him when he really wakes up and you can even stay all night with him too (I did).  Then he might have a sore throat for a few days but that he gets lots of popsicles and icecream to help with that then he will feel better.

  3. How about an adult perspective? I was in the hospital over night when they took my tonsils out (i was 19 at the time).  They say 23hrs observation in case there is a reaction to the drugs or he gets scared by this new feeling in the back of his throat (Dont worry about the timing, he'll be asleep for almost all of it).

My helpful hints: Tylenol is going to be useless in this situation - use the prescribed drugs the doctor gives you. (My mommy crushed mine in grape jelly). Popsicles and ice cream are great, but after 3 days - he's going to hate them.  If you have a blender - get those microwave raviolis.  cook em and blend em! The warm feels good and anything that isnt sugary sweet is Welcome after 3 days!!! Be prepared for some A.d.d. - being laid up in bed for a few days gets boring quickly.  Movies, video games, books, board games, invite his friends over - ANYTHING.  When the kid gets bored - he'll notice how much pain he's in.  Keep him distracted.

As to explain the procedure, i have no idea how to go about that.  I guess maybe a cute story about how he has two frogs in his throat, and they need them at the zoo or something. I dunno - get creative.

  4. my 4 yr old daughter had hers taken out 6 months ago and yes they kept her overnight but it was fine because i stayed with her and there were other children her age in the ward who she could play with and yeah. he will be fine, he gets to eat lots of ice cream and jelly!
