My husband and I have decided to start trying for a baby but I am now paranoid that my irregular periods as a teenager may mean something bad. I was put on the pill at 15 to control them as I would have a period and bleed for about 10 days then about 2 weeks later I would start bleeding again for another 10 days. Sometimes it was only after 1 week and again I would start bleeding. I was on the pill for this then continued taking the pill for birth control and now I have stopped taking the pill I still haven't had a period for a few months but the doctor said this is normal. I felt too silly asking the doctor about my paranoid worries about being unable to conceive. I also worry that my 'lifestyle' during my early 20's may have 'damaged' me i.e. heavy drinking and smoking at University which I have stopped years ago. Am I maybe working myself up into a panic. I am 29 and fear I am going to have problems and it will be too late to work anything out.

Sorry for the ramble - I just really want to conceive and want to know if anyone thinks any of the above sounds like it could possibly cause me problems.

  1. im 21 n my lifestyle was the same n period problems n hey im 21 weeks preg now.

  2. I too am 29 and have irregular periods and was put on the pill at 16.  I stopped taking the pill when we decided to start baby making.  Here's the deal, because you have irregular periods, it will be challenging to know when you are ovulating.  It took us 3 months of just trying to guess when i was ovulating and it didn't work.  I then researched and purchased one of the best inventions ever!  The OV-WATCH.  It is amazing, you wear it at night while you sleep, starting the first day of your period.  It reads the chloride ions in your sweat and can tell you your 5 most successful days to concieve, it really is amazing, I got pregnant the first month.  check it out on ovwatch.com it really takes the stress out of baby making.  Good luck!

  3. I am also 29, and throughout most of my life, my periods were pretty irregular.  I didn't really care or pay much attention to it at all...until I got married and decided to try for children.  Initially, I was really anxious and thought I couldn't have children...but after only 6 months, I got pregnant!

I am currently 7 weeks with baby #1!

There is always hope...don't dwell to much on trying, but spend your energy on thinking about nurturing your love with your spouse.  That worked for me!

  4. Overactive hormones.  I had heavy, irregular periods when I was younger.  I also had five children.  When I got older, I had a prescription specifically designed to reduce menstrual blood flow, and now have an implant.  Your body is very good at repairing itself once you've stopped damaging it. Alcohol is most dangerous if taken when the child is in utero.  Smoking too. They may have left some residual damage in you, but very unlikely to be in your reproductive system.

The thing most likely to prevent you conceiving is getting all stressed up about it.

  5. i had irregular periods so much so that i did not know i was pregnant till i was 3 months gone.and i was a heavy drinker/smoker so don't worry.it is still early yet after pill.

  6. I also had very irregular periods when I was younger. I would go like two months or so without having one. Then I would have them the same time every month for about 5 or 6 months.  I also did a lot of heavy drinking from 19 to 22. But now I am 23 and was on birth control and got pregnant. So yes I think it is possible to have a baby even if you had irregular periods when younger and drank a lot. Good luck!

  7. my friend had irregular periods when she was younger and in 5 years from the age of 14 to 19 she only had about 3 periods.she also went on the pill to try to make them regular but it didnt really make much difference.however at the age of 22 she became pregnant when she truly beleived that shed never have a baby due to her periods.theres always hope and i really hope youll be blessed with a baby soon.good luck x
