  1. Yeah, we have it here. What it's like depends on the program. A couple we have here (we have a public Catholic system as well as a public regular system) are known to be challenging. But from what I've heard of some from other places, some students find theirs easier. It'll depend.

The hardest part is probably time management, but it's a great opportunity to develop some good time management skills and self-discipline.

  2. Yes, I go to one myself. I'm in California Virtual Academy and this is my fourth year. (I'm a sophmore.) Compared to traditional school, a student can have the choice to work ahead if he/she wants to. However, the school is strict enough not to let you fall behind. It takes self-discipline to turn in your work without someone in front of you nagging you. My school provides all the books, computer, and supplies. They also pay for a portion of the internet fee. There is no charge whatsoever. It also takes honesty to uphold their honor statement for test ect. Overall, I like it and I plan to graduate from this school.

  3. Yes...

...and it seems to be commonly mistaken for homeschooling.

How does it compare to a "brick school?"  I imagine the depends on both the "brick school" and the particular online program.

Our school district has been looking into offering courses online that they cannot offer "in the building."  Things such as more foreign languages and more AP courses.

  4. Yes - NTOEC ( http://www.ntoec.nt.edu.au ) and SIDE ( http://www.side.wa.edu.au ) are the ones that spring to mind immediately.

They are what they claim to be: bog standard primary/high schools, but based online.

Distance education rather than home education.

  5. yeah, i have.  it's a lot quicker and easier.  you take classes at your own pace, but still usually end up finishing sooner than traditional students :)

  6. Many highschools have that option now.  The classes allow students to work at their own pace, they have teachers available during certain hours but you can create your own schedule.

  7. Yes, one of my kids does it.

I am not thrilled with it, and will probably go back to homeschool next year. It is not challenging enough in my opinion-I have to supplement it so much that I feel I might as well just go back to custom-making our own curriculum.

  8. Yeah, my high school was thinking about it.

I guess you can take your classes wherever you want as long as you have a computer in the room and you can review the class as many times as you want.

Personally, I think it's a bad idea because the point of public high school is to meet boys, make the best friends of your life, laugh in the hallway and lunch, go to the dances, play the team sports, and just be SOCIAL!!♥

  9. There are two public and one private one I know of.

The Florida Virtual School which awards a Florida Diploma.

I think Arizona or Colorado has one.

Then there is a private one.  Actually a couple of them.  One includes a computer and dedicated intranet connection.

I think the other is K12

You can sample the Florida school for free if you want to get an idea of it.

They have part of one course for every grade level and every major field.

I looked at their electronics course in science once
