I got a letter on Monday from my sons camp stating that the philly police department was going there to show the kids a video from their heads up program about drug use and how it affects your life....well he needed a parents signature to say he can watch video, not knowing exactly what it contained my husband and I agreed for him to watch...the video was supposed to be there on Thursday, but they had it today....when he came home he was very upset, he is only 10 by the way...so i tried to explain to him thats why the police wanted you to watch this video to show you what happens to kids and adults when they use drugs....was I wrong to let him have watched this, but I think it did do its job, he said he will never do drugs because he doesnt want to be dead like the kids in the video.....I am confused I feel bad now, but I didnt know how graphic this was going to be....If you did hear of this is there any way I can get the video to see for myself and try to explain to my son better?

  1. I have seen this program three times. You were right to let your child see it. The Heads-Up program is one of the most vivid and realistic looks into what drugs can do to a person and to their families. I saw it the first time at my sons boy scout meeting. I then called both the grade school and the high school that my children attend and asked them to have the program as well. They both had the program come to their schools and both have agreed to try to have them come every year. The world of drugs is not a pretty place, and these officers do a fantactic job at showing that. You son may have been upset, but he learned a lesson that hopefully he will carry with him forever. You won't be able to get a copy of the video, because it is a "stop & go" thing. The officers do a lot of talking, there are photos, videos and sometimes a parent that speaks about how their childs drug use (and sometimes their resulting death) has effected the family. I encourage you to try to find out where the program will be shown so you can see it. One of the best ways to help children is to educate the parents. I learned a lot from the program. It is scary to see how much we don't know, and what kind of things our children can be introduced to when they are not with us. So, go see it, and then spread he word!
