I went on the weekend Ensenada trip from Nov 30-Dec 2, 2007.  The ship is old, and the cheaper rooms are in desperate need of an update.  On the bright side, the dinners were amazing.  Just a recommendation, even if you like sushi, DON'T go to Jade.  It's a waste of money and it was completely dead.  Also, Ensenada is not a glamorous location, so staying on board that day isn't a bad idea.  Overall, the service was great, but the ship itself is really, really old.

I went last year the last week of April and am going again on Apr. 21st in a few weeks. I scored a deck 8 cabin for a deck 2 price. Someone cancelled their reservation and I snagged it. cruisedirect and priceline are both good for up to the minute pricing and availibility.

I like RC better than Carnival overall. The public areas are nicer and fancier, and the food is better. I went on Carnival Elation last year. The cabins are bigger and better than RC and drinks are a little cheaper but that is all. The food made me and others sick and the public areas weren't kept as clean.  

Catalina Island is a paradise, espcially this time of year and Ensenada is great for partying. The pool deck on the Monarch is always hopping in the afternoons as well.
