My son has FPIES (Food Protein Induced Eterocolitis Syndrome) to milk protein. I was wondering when your child grew out of his/her Fpies? My son is 2 years old and I am hoping he has grow out of it by now but I am scared to do an oral food test. Did anyone find an allergist that was able to diagnose the FPIES without actually feeding the child the causative food.

  2. Hi.  My 2 year old son also has FPIES.  Took almost 18 months for him to finally be correctly diagnosed, and it was my husband who figured it out and brought it to our gatro's attention.  Also changed gastros.

To answer your question, my son's gastro says that some kids never grow tolerance for the culprit foods but most resolve themselves by the age of 3.  My son's demon food is rice.  Rice, rice flour, rice oil, rice bran...it's in a lot of stuff.

Though we have not intentionally challenged him on the rice, he has had two episodes of accidental exposure in the last year and I can tell you that though he still has a reaction, it's just bad now, not horrible or life-threatening like it used to be.  By the way, rice flour coats BK french fries.

If you really want to know how he's coming along, my only suggestion would be to choose a day where you can devote yourself and your child to what's to come, give a teeensie eeeensie amount of whatever to him and start watching the clock.  Of course be there for him, but really, sadly, there is no other way to know if he's coming out of it or not.

    I hope this is helpful.

  3. FPIES is diagnosed based only upon the symptoms...there is no type of test that can be done other than a food challenge.

  4. that stinks and i'm sorry but there's no way to tell if you're allergic to something without testing the actual product on you. but don't be afraid, it's a tiny amount and the testing will be done in a controlled environment.
