Did anyone see the earthquake rating scale based on damaging effects on CNN News this Morning?

The Meteorologist broke it out on the weather forecasts;

What did you think of it?

Should Hurricanes and Tornados be rated the same way?

Should this kind of realistic assessment type of rating system replace the scaler-simpson scales? (sorry, muppyuk...; if I butchered the spelling, and good questions on hurricanes earlier; I'll try to help you as much as I can through Answers.)

  2. A lot of people don't understand the Richter scale because it is a logarithmic function. This one happens to be based on base ten.

    So the scale is actually the exponent that ten is raised to.......

    If you compare a 5 to an 8, the lay person would say the 8 is about 60% greater, but what it really means is:

    10^5 compared to 10^8, or 1,000,000 compared to 1,000,000,000. This shows that an 8 is actually 1,000 times more energetic compared to a 5.....

    As for hurricanes (since Katrina and Camille both went over my house) don't get me started on the ridiculous Saffir-Simpson SWAG scale :-)

  5. I think that all desasters should have a scale from like 1 to 100 or something it shouldent be a different scale for a different event. Should all be the same judging system. based on the energy that was released...
