Did anyone watch the Kimbo versus James Thompson fight?

I'm not going to talk c**p about any of the two fighters. But tonight's match was very impressive and i think we can all agree that James Thompson was poorly underestimated.

James proved to the world tonight that Kimbo does have a weakness and i believe other EliteXC fighters will now pick up on that weakness. Although Kimbo fought well we did not see too much of his stand up brawler side of him. Kimbo claimed he wanted to take this fight to the ground to prove to everyone in the MMA that he can indeed match other opponents. Unfortunatly Kimbo did not do well to prove anything but the simple fact that he can be beaten when the fight is on the ground.

I believe the refs called this a little too early despite the fact of what happened to James ear. I believe he could of kept going and maybe have gotten another take down. Then again it looks like James would of been knocked out after maybe two more strong punches from Kimbo at that moment.

What are your thoughts on the match?

  1. He was really taking hard blows to the head i mean yes he probably could have kept going but it would have only gotten worse for him. I couldnt believe he wasnt dropping from some of those punches. Plus you would have seen an ear on the mat.

  2. I would have to say that kimbo was a joke. He really took a beating. The truth is 80% of all fights end up on the ground. He can only fight if he is standing up. This type of fighting is not his game. He should go for boxing but those guys have remarkable skill in the ring and he just would not hold up. Kimbo just needs to stick to the streets.

  3. First off I am not impressed when these kind of matches will have such great publicity and then in reality Kimbo has only had two fights. Then I only saw the last round and a half but James just let Kimbo punch him soild several different times without really ducking or moving away or counter puching. it was almost like the guy can't box. I was dissapointed in the fight and wonder that even though these gus are strong and seem in shape are they really non experienced for what they are doing? One preview showed Kimbo punching down a fat out-of-shape-looking guy and that seemed like almost anybody can get in that fight game.

  4. What other EliteXC heavyweights? Kimbo is EliteXC's main attraction. They have no real competition.

  5. I wanted to see the knockout because it could have come.  It really could have gone either way, though, as Kimbo took like 30 elbows to the heads just minutes prior because he's new on the ground.  He definitely needs some Judo training for his groundwork and needs to work on some setup punches because everything he throws is a KO attempt.  That said, he lands enough of them to be effective.  I'm going to keep watching him.

  6. I strongly believed that event was made in a way to control the audience's viewpoints. Basically Elite made that event to influence audience to believe what Elite wants them to believe being it the first national broadcast MMA. Because they want Kimbo and Carano as the faces of that company, they were heavily promoted and compliment during the event. But yes, I was impressed with how much Kimbo has learned on the ground (some submissions he actually did).

  7. Thompson was robbed.  Sure, if he had a few more shots he might have been knocked out.  But you don't stop a fight while a fighter is still standing and trying to trade punches.

A fix?  Probably.  Gary Shaw knows that if Kimbo falls, it means the death of the goose that lays the golden eggs.

And if Thompson survived, he might have put Kimbo on his back for more ground and pound, and Shaw wouldn't want that to happen, would he?

  8. the fight should have been stopped in the second round when kimbo took around 30 unanswered blows.. it was rigged!!

  9. I say the fights that kimbo should \line up next are....Bob Sapp, Ronald McDonald, one of Mike Tyson's ex girlfriends, and Bob Barker...I think the promoters can fix it so he can win one of the aforementioned matchups.

  10. It was a fixed fight. Cheat is what it was

  11. It was ok. Nothing too out of the ordinary in the way of action. Bas still has plenty of work to do with developing Kimbo, and Kimbo himself says he's really not a high level guy yet.

The ear thing was a little premature I think. It should have ended in a knockout, which is where it would have went, and it also should have gone because Kimbo didn't lose by stoppage when James was raining on him.

Skillwise, it looks like Kimbo is making some progress, but he still needs more cardio, more speed, and much more groundfighting work.

  12. I thought Thompson had it won at the end of the second round. I expected the ref to end the fight because it didn't seem like Kimbo was doing a good job protecting himself.

  13. Doesn't matter Kimbo popped his califlower ear. That must've hurt.

  14. Thompson has trained his whole life fighting on the ground.  Kimbo hasn't, it's new to him.  He fought Thompson's style of fight and held his own.  You put the two together in a boxing-style match only and Thompson would get owned.

  15. james was on his way to the floor after that last punch before they stoped the fight james would have been on his back if the fight wasnt stopped he was stumbling check it out on youtube

  16. yes I did and I think it was fixed cause they stop the fight when Thompson was about to win.Kimbo was gassed out.

  17. I have never seen a fight that was fixed like this one was for "BIMBO" he lost the fight in the second round when Thompson was beating him down.

  18. Exactly yours my friend.

  19. ALL THIS FIGHT NEEDED IS DON KING......FIXED KIMBO SUCKS

  20. he basically proved he's an up and comer, not a main eventer like cbs was hyping him as

  21. Kimbo looked like he was over-matched. He looked like he was getting his butt beat. If that James Thompson guy hadn't started bleeding the fight just could have been his. Check out the video...

  22. Thompson looked like a r****d every time he got hit. Then again, he looked kind of retarded before he ever got hit. So it isn't like his expression changed that much in round 3 when his ear erupted. I knew it was just a matter of time before that ear blew up like a grenade. It looked terrible BEFORE the fight started. As a  matter of fact, it looks like cauliflower ear is the standard among MMA fighters, as he wasn't the only one with a gnarly looking ear on the card tonight. Kimbo is a media creation. He hasn't beaten anyone of any significance yet. He was absolutely exhausted tonight after 2 rounds. Sure, he's great when he's beating up tomato cans on the streets of Miami, but this is a whole different ballgame. Thompson has 8 losses, so he isn't exactly a household word in MMA. As a matter of fact, I doubt if he's a household word in his own household.

  23. Kimbo didn't fight well, he got a lucky break by that ear popping.  Thompson is a pathetic fighter in comparison to the "real" MMA fighters, and they would destroy him.  Kimbo hasn't been up agaist a real opponent yet, and when he does; he's going down in 20 seconds.

  24. I think the fight was fixed. Kimbo tapped earlier and there was no call, and then fight was stopped prematurely even though i do think thompson was ready to be knocked out.

Bottom line, kimbo has to keep training and fight more credible fighters before he is given credit for being a great mma fighter. Fixing fights arent going to help with his credibility.  He has no cardio and needs more experience and shouldnt be headlining fights but its all marketing.

  25. Come on, Thompson lost 7 of his last 9 fights. He was just another cherry picked opponent for Slice who has fought nothing but bums and Slice nearly got beaten by this hack.
