  1. Unification. Introduced by Shihuangdi, the development of a universal writing system helped unify a group of warring states into a single country. The states had different writing systems but the same language and culture. The first emperor sought to correct this with what has now developed into "chinese writing." The writing helped speed communication and government while removing distinctions between the populations of the former states.
