Did europeans have corn prior to the discovery of the americas?

i believe that native americans introduced european settlers to corn, but i am looking for confirmation.

  1. The native people of the Americas did introduce Europeans to maize, a plant first domesticated in Central America, but there was a word used for a very cheap form of grain, used in making bread for the poor in particular, and this was called corn.

    Evidently the word was later applied to maize because it was cheaper than wheat or barley.

  4. That's correct, but be aware that in European, especially British usage, "corn" still means ANY kind of grain: "Indian corn" is the name for the specific stuff you mean [maize].

    Just so that any pre-Columbian references you may find to "corn" don't s***w you up.
