Question:

Did global warming cause the Sri Lanka Tsunami?

What I thought, randomly, was that the earthquake triggered the tsunami, and the earthquake was triggered by the tectonic plates- but does this have any relevance to global warming? thanks and no cut and paste answers x

  1. No. Not at all, since Global Warming has nothing to do with anything, since it's not real.

The media will probably blame it for that next.

    It's all Bush's fault!

  2. Hi!

    Actually no.

Since underwater volcanic eruptions and it is just normal environmental event. But it is caused by asteroid's impact and testing nuclear weapons.

  3. My first reaction would be to say "of course not, it was just plate tectonics", but if part of the sea level rise is due to thermal expansion, perhaps heating will eventually reach far enough into the mantle to expand plates and put additional pressure on them.

Given that it can take hundreds of years for the ocean to turn over and distribute heat (and that it happens through currents and not conduction), it would probably take a long time.  So I would conclude that increased earthquakes (and resulting tsunamis) may some day be observed, but the Sri Lanka Tsunami was probably too soon to be one of those.

Interesting question.  I wonder if someone has calculated heating of the earth's mantle and possible expansion rates...

  4. Yes. Indirectly.

Glaciers are melting thus releasing enormous weight from the land. The changes in pressure on the land result in tectonic movements as the land rises from under its former burden. A tectonic change here causes tectonic changes there. Kinda sorta like getting rid of bubbles in wallpaper.

    Everything is interconnected.

The glaciers were mostly gone before Bush was even born.

  5. Plate techtonics caused the earthquake and that cause the tsunami.

  6. You were correct in thinking that an earthquake triggered the tsunami.  It has absolutely nothing to do with global warming.

  7. You say you don't appreciate anon's answer, but his answer is correct. Short and lacking explanation I grant you, but right.

Tsunamis have NOTHING to do with global warming. They are caused by seismic events such as earthquakes and landslides under the ocean. Temperatures have nothing at all to do with them.

  8. Earthquakes have nothing to do with global warming.  A few of the GW "true believers" tried to blame it on global warming but even the mainstream media laughed at the suggestion.

  9. No my f**t did

  10. No.

  11. there isn't any proof of global warming, and if there was currently any global warming it wouldn't cause tsunamis as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions or meteors do

  12. What do they teach you guys in school?  Nice work Al Gore this is your legacy.
