Question:

Did i do something stupid when i fixed my door hinge?

By the way, i rent, so i don't own this door. Nor the wall.

Anyways, the bathroom door hinge and screws were getting rusty from the moisture i guess. The hinge no longer held the door to the wall, except for two of the six screws.

So i replaced the screws, but they would not "bite". The brand new screws were useless. So i got six more screws with the same basic thread, but twice as long and i drove those b******s in with a power drill !!!

It worked great.

But did i do any damage? Don't laugh at me, i don't know anything about this c**p. I should have just called the landlord, but it was a simple job, or i thought it was.

Is driving screws an inch into "virgin" territory in that part of the wall (in the door frame) a no-no, or no big deal.

thanks.

  1. you done good.  the only problem you could have caused whas drilling them into a water pipe, but you would have found that out real quick.  your new screws probably were no longer than a couiple inches, so they just bit into the studs better than the old.  happens all the time.

  2. Its fine. The first screws proabably didn't hold because of the original holes. So putting longer screws in just hit wood further back and gave you more of a grip.

  3. You did no damage unless some switch/plug no longer work (hit an electric line). The next time you encounter this problem, drive wood splinters into the holes and use normal screws...the new wood will expand when the screws to into it and hold the screws just fine. Good luck, Goldwing

  4. Shouldn't be a problem normally.

  5. you didn't do anything wrong. if anything you made it a lot better for the next guy.

  6. You did exactly the right thing. Since the original screws were no longer holding, your choices were to use longer screws or thicker screws, or doctor the hole to make it smaller. In a hinge, you can't usually use thicker screws because they won't sit flush in the hinge, doctoring the hole is fussy, time-consuming and not always very effective in something that takes as much weight as a door hinge, so longer was the simplest and best way to go. Welcome to DIY.

  7. I think you did fine here, good job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. You get an "A" for effort in my book. I think the longer screws is what it took, given the circumstances, so don't wonder if you did something stupid. I rate it: No big deal.
