  1. Employees of a company get W2's; vendors get 1099's.  So if taxes were taken from your check, you are a W2 employee, otherwise you are a 1099 vendor and pay your own taxes.

  2. If you are in the UK where you posted rather than in the US, you probably don't get either one.

Were social security and medicare shown on your paystub as deductions?  Then the company is treating you as an employee, and you should get a W-2.  If not, then you'll get a 1099.

If the job you are talking about was very short and you only worked for them in the same quarter when you filed for unemployment, then those amounts probably wouldn't have been counted.  They usually look at prior quarters.  If you worked for that job in prior quarters also, gather up those pay stubs and check with the unemployment comp people.

  3. You have probably been an employee who was misclassified as an independent contractor.  If your earnings don't show up on unemployment records, make a personal appeal for an audit to determine your true status.

Also, don't post USA tax questions in United Kingdom taxes.
