  1. I think that they had last names.

  2. They did, and still currently do, have surnames, or last names, but rarely have need to use them on a daily basis.  After all, how many Queen Elizabeths are there in the world right now?

Kind of like Cher or Madonna, who really do have last names, if anyone bothers to keep up.

  3. yes they had last names. it is typically refers to "House of"

ex Henry VIII is of the house of Tudor. His last name was Tudor

  4. they did have last names, but they werent often recorded because they are all from the same bloodline. plus, if you get too far back in history last names had not yet become standard.

  5. They do. Queen Elizabeth's surname is Windsor.

The reason they were known only by the first name is because their position in the land was so unique there was no possibility of mixing them up with someone else.

  6. The British/English monarchs' surnames are usually identified by the "Royal House" they ruled from. A Royal House or royal dynasty is a familial designation, or family name of sorts, used by royalty. For example, King James I of Scotland was from the House of Stuart, therefore, he was James Stuart. Queen Elizabeth I of England was from the House of Tudor, therefore, she was Elizabeth Tudor. This formality and tradition, was carried through even into today's British royal family. The Queen's surname is Windsor. Originally Wettin, however, high anti-German feeling among the people during World War I prompted the Royal Family to abandon all titles held under the German crown and to change German-sounding titles and house names for English-sounding versions.

The House of Windsor is the current Royal House of the United Kingdom and each of the other Commonwealth realms, lead by The Queen. After her marriage to Philip Mountbatten (Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh), she have announced that their descendant's official surname will be "Mountbatten-Windsor." Therefore, when The Prince Charles of Wales, heir to the British throne, is crowned King, he will rule from "The House of Mountbatten-Windsor."

  7. yes in theroy they become head of a royal house, although they never use a last nam as they are soveign, they are in effect a "tudor" or "windsor" if the monarchy were to be abolished tommorow queen elizabeth would become Elizabeth Windsor.

  8. Royals are known by their Royal House Names.Queen Elizabeth II is of The Royal House of Windsor (originally The Royal House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha).King Henry VIII was of The Royal House of Tudor. This rule applies to all Royals.Prince Andrew, Duke of York doesn't use Windsor or Mountbatten-Windsor,but his Royal House designation of York to describe his personal family. His brother,Prince Edward,Earl of Wessex uses Wessex to identify his branch of the family.Royals typically do not use last names, but Royal House names.
