Question:

Did life on earth evolve from extraterrestrial origins?

I heard somewhere that the building blocks of life could have been deposited (or somehow settled) on earth from the dust or particles from a comet or asteroid or meteorite...

What do you think?

  1. Quite possible.

  2. Until we can find the video tape, anything is possible!

It's even possible that the "Creator" threw those "building-blocks" onto the earth, to see what would happen...

Perhaps he had a celestial Science-Project due before finals?

  3. It is very possible

  4. No.

  5. Carbon is considered the backbone of life on Earth (which is why on Star Trek humans are always being called carbon-based life forms).  Hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen are the other elements needed by living organisms.

A number of chemists have done work on how these four elements can combine to make life (for lack of a better term).  One famous experiment on this was called the Miller-Urey experiment, in which water, ammonia, methane, and hydrogen were combined and then an electric current (simulating lightning) was passed over it.  They created several amino acids, sugars, and some precursors to DNA and RNA (although not these materials themselves).  They also created compounds that were poisonous but also used by living beings (such as cyanide).

In any case, there is no reason that these materials couldn't have been deposited by a comet or meteorite.

There's also a theory called "exogenesis."  It's possible that life originated elsewhere in the universe and was deposited on this planet by meteorite or comet activity.  It turns out that some kinds of bacteria can be dormant for millions of years and could have flown here inside a meteorite or comet.

I think that life originated right here on earth.  When the Miller-Urey experiment was performed, the researchers had a hard time keeping organic compounds from forming.  I like that explanation mostly because it's the easiest possibility.

  6. i think that a corrolition of non-organic materials formed together to create a chemiscal reaction called life.

  7. Think this is "Colony Earth", as there are just three basic races of people, white, black and yellow. the rest is just a mix of these. So feel the people on Earth is the result of space ships colonizing it. Maybe their planets got as polluted as our earth.
