  2. Yes. Serena beat Sharapova easily the first time they played in Miami 2004. This was just after Serena came back from knee surgery, which probably explains why Serena underestimated Sharapova when she played her in the Wimbledon final a few months later. Sharapova stunned Serena (who was the heavy favorite) 6-4 6-1 to win her first major title at the 2004 Wimbledon Championships. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aC6tbjDG7...

Later that same year at the WTA Tour Championships, Serena was up 4-0 in the third set when an abdominal strain restricted her serving. Sharapova went on to win 6 straight games to win the match 4-6 6-2 6-4 over the injured Serena.

That match was a turning point in their rivalry.

Just a few months later in the 2005 Australian Open semi-final, the two faced off again. This time it was Sharapova who was the heavy favorite. Almost everyone had written Serena off including the commentators and members of the tennis media.

Bud Collins maliciously asked Serena (during her quarterfinal post match interview) if "her game was in decline," which clearly rattled Serena. The match commentators (mainly Mary Carillo and Pam Shriver) stressed during the live broadcast semifinal match that they think her game was in fact in decline.

For a set and a half it looked like Sharapova was in full command (to the delight of the commentators). But, Serena valiantly fought back from the defecit. Saving 3 match points to go on to win 2-6 7-5 8-6 before a stunned crowd and a dumfounded Sharapova. This was without a doubt their best and most intense match.

Two years later in the 2007 Australian Open final. Top seed Maria Sharapova walked on court against a slow, overweight, and out of practice Serena who struggled throughout the Championships. She was lucky just to be in the final after having a few close calls in earlier rounds. Many people expected the ever confident Sharapova to blow a vulnerable Serena off court. But, once again Serena proved that when she is determined, she is unrivaled. Serena gave Sharapova her worse beating in a grand slam tournament by winning 6-1 6-2 in just a little over 1 hour.

The humiliation continued for Sharapova later that same year with Serena thrashing her 6-1 6-1 in Miami.

In 2008 the two met for the first time on clay with Sharapova having a brief look at dignity with a 5-7 6-4 1-6 loss.

The Venus/Sharapova matches were a little less dramatic with Sharapova winning their 3 hardcourt meetings and Venus winning their two grasscourt meetings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrmjHBa2t...

Unofficially, Venus has beaten Sharapova 2 additional times in an Australian Open warm up exhibition tournament they both played on hardcourts in 2006 and 2008. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y58_PQVLV...

For sheer drama the matches were awesome. These ladies definitely bring the best out of each other.

  3. Yeap, several times.  Maria needs to watch because they way Serena looks right now, she's doing great and looking fit.  So does Venus except for her recent medical injury.  Maria is like Justine Henin, she only wins against a Williams when either sister is off their games.  But when Serena or Venus are focused, Maria or Justine can only pray that they could score even just one game.  Venus kicked Maria's behind in Wimbledon so many times.  For some reason, Venus loses at other tournaments but when it comes to Wimbledon, she turns on her game and she's invincible.  Same thing with Serena.  She didn't do well this time but last year, she embarrassed Maria at the Australian Open.  Maria, like someone here commented, "could and should beat Serena".  Yes she can, but she needs to watch it because it looks likes the Williams sisters are looking to take their place back in the top rankings.  I think it's why Justine quit because she saw a different Serena when she lost 6-0 6-2 I think in Miami.  She would rather go out while she's on top of her game than getting a beat down like that from the sisters and anyone else at the end of her career.  Serena has won the French before and I think she's hungry.  I watched her match today and she's moving very well and hitting very well.  Other than injuries, I don't think anyone can stop her.

  4. Maria could and should beat Serena this year at RG.  The others already answered your Q. Maria needs to keep her confidence high when battling Serena.

  5. maria sharapova has faced serena multiple times.  They have played many times, the first being marias first wimbledon title. Sharapova upset the highly favored serena to beat her 6-1,   6-4.  They go back and forth whenever they play, most of the time serena wins.

  6. You must not follow tennis.  Who do you think Maria beat in the final when she won Wimbledon at age 17?  It was Serena Williams, and Maria destroyed her in straight sets.  Overall, Sharapova is 2-5 against Serena, and 3-2 against Venus.
