Yes, he won eight.  Seven of the wins were world records.

Too bad you've not been paying attention.  Two of the races were may have been the most exciting races that have ever occurred in the Olympics.  In one race, the 4 x 100 free relay, the US came from behind to win on the last stroke by 0.08 seconds.  In Phelps' 100 meter butterfly, he won on the last stroke by 0.01 seconds.  The races were absolutely incredible.

With those wins, Phelps becomes the greatest gold medal winner in a single Olympics in the history of the games.  In addition, he won 6 gold medals in the Athens games giving him a total of 14 golds which is more than any athlete has ever won in the history of the games.  I s'pose that makes Phelps the greatest Olympic athlete of all time.

To Trophy who said I was wrong that Phelps won by a tenth (0.1)  and not a hundredth (0.01) and didn't deserve the best answer:

First, you should go back to 4th grade math and learn your decimals and stop showing yourself to be an ignoramus.  Second, better check your history and then delete or apologize on the board ... Phelps won by 0.01 seconds with a time of 50.58 to 50.59 for Cavic.  

Your public apology will show you're an honest person.
