Did my boss assault my boyfriend?

I was at work( part-time at a restaurant ) and my boyfriend came to pick me up just as i was quitting due to my schedule at school. My boss was yelling at me in the kitchen area, using a very colorful vocabulary, and my boyfriend could hear him from the dinning portion of the building. As my boyfriend looked in the kitchen to see what the fuss was about, my boss violently shoved him. Can we take my boss to court for simple assault in South Dakota, and if so would it be worth it?

If you want criminal charges filed, then go to the police.  If you want to sue him in civil court, then you'd have to decide whether or not to sue the business owner or the boss in his personal capacity.  In all honesty, I'd move on and not spend the time or energy required.  Best wishes in the future.

If you believe it was simple assault, that should have been reported to the police.  That is a misdemeanor.

If you mean to ask whether you should file a civil lawsuit, first consider what your boyfriend's losses were.  For what damage would he be suing?

I am not sure your boyfriend wants to press it.  If he had entered an area for employees only, might he have been trespassing?
