Did my friend send a virus to my computer?

Yesterday my computer started acting very slow and screwed up after I opened an email from a friend. It was so bad I had to remove the battery from my laptop- seemed like my computer was almost crashing or something. I then inserted the battery back in the computer, and since then it acts up if I get online. I had just cleaned up my hard drive before I opened that email and my daughter thinks my friend probably sent me a virus…the email was just a couple of long paragraphs and that was it. Is it possible my friend sent me a virus? And if so, is it possible to tell if my friend sent one to my computer?
