Did my hamster have wetail?

in 2006 i brought a hamster (louise) then she was really fun and lively and then in 2008 i noticed she wasnt as lively and she had runny poo and didnt eat or drink i was going to take her to the vets but before i could she died but the signs of wetail lasted a week and then she died did she have wetail?

I'm so sorry for the loss of Louise...i LOVE hamsters, i currently have one.  I'm not a vet but it does sound like your hamster had wetail.  I bought a hamster last year, he was just a baby.  His cagemate in the petstore had wetail, and a few days after i bought him he started showing runny poo symptoms too, and also died before i could bring him back to the store to be nursed.  Maybe you might want to investigate your hamster's diet and cage to find the culprit of the wetail so that when you get a new baby, it won't suffer the same thing.  Wetail could be a result of:

-Food that didn't mix well with your hamster's tummy,

-A cage that hasn't been cleaned in a long time

-Rotten fresh food (like if you feed your hamster produce and it waited too long to eat it.

-Various other things

*they shouldn't have even sold me the hammy with wetail so make sure you ask lots of questions about the cagemates when you go shopping for a new hammy.

Actually, I don't think that she had wet tail.  Wet tail usually occurs in younger hamstes and kills them within a day or two.

I'd be more inclined to think that she simply died of old age.  I've had hamsters that have "slowed down" and had problems with bodily functions in the last week or two of their lives when they're old.

Yeah, the symptoms you described sound like your hamster louise had had wet tail. To notice that your hamster has wettail the cage could be really smelly, too.

yes, the signs of wet tail are visable a week before it unfortunatly kills the hamster. another sign is also if there was a steong smell in the cage.

Hmm...I think so, although your hamster lived the average life span of a hamster!

It sounds like she did. All of those symptoms tells me that she definitely had Wet Tail. I am sorry.

But it sounds like your hamster's lifetime was normal. They only live about 2-3 years.
