I didn’t hear it but I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if it were true. Mandela was the figurative leader of the African National Congress (ANC). I have yet to meet an American who actually knows that the ANC  is a communist political party and was at odds with the pro-Western Zulu nation. This is the reason Reagan and Thatcher refused for so long to give any support to the ANC which actually had financing and support from the USSR. The US and UK among others gave their support to the Zulus. Given the success that the Zulus demonstrated in running their own autonomous societies in South Africa, had they come to power instead of the ANC, South Africa would not have fallen into the h**l it now finds itself. The movement against apartheid was a good one but for the Left, it was about political alliances, not principle. If principle was the issue, why did they abandon the Zulus?
