  1. Irons produce heat which help straighten out material. So the iron doesn't straighten the clothing, the heat does.

In relation to your question, before irons were invented, people just used different sources of heating from steam. They boiled up water in a lengthy bucket and laid their clothes over it, as the steam was rising up, it would penetrate through their clothing. This gave it a little bit of moisture, but nevertheless still straightened their clothing.

  2. Irons used to be made of medal and placed near an open fire to get hot they then would be used to take the wrinkles out. These irons have been around for a long time.

There is also the pants press which flattens, smooths and straightens pants.

Also the same clothes were worn often and they were cleaned and hung in such a way as to prevent most wrinkles.

Fine garments were handled with care

    I hope that helped!

  3. They used something called a mangle (although later this term described the wringer that extracted water from laundry) which pressed very hard on fabrics.  There was also a clothes press which was as big as a bed with heavy weights on top and the linens were left there to flatten.  As to their clothes, people did not wash their clothes very much (if at all).

  4. probably not, they may have got a iron block and heated it up to use it, and thats probably where the iron came from =]
