phrases like shiver me timbers & avast me hearties in the 'pirate accent' that's used or is that just movieland glamourising them

  1. probably but i think the actors in film over exagerate it because there not true pirates  


  2. For the most part, yes. For example, the "timbers" are the boards that the ship is made of. Here's a good pirate dictionary for beginners.

  3. What they actually say is "Where you money!!??, Tel now or you die pig!!..Where money?...  You got nice wife, maybe i keep her, where you money!! NOW!"

    Then they may or may not kill you and/or rape any women on board before taking what they want and burning the boat.

    Shiver me timbers? I think not.

  4. Yes but only to a certain extent. These stereotypical accents you recall have only relevance from the Elezabethan erea from which these accents resemble accents from cornwall or Bristol.

    Other pirates never spoke with the above accents and termology.

    They spoke English.

    The phrase and accent were popularized by Robert Newton, the actor who played Long John Silver in the movies and on TV through much of the 1950s.
