  1. Christopher Columbus came on the Atlantic Ocean and there are pirates ruling the Pacific Ocean now of the coast of China and Japan and Thailand.

  2. Pirates in the Pacific were mainly Asians and stayed pretty much on the trade routes along the coast of SE to NE Asia and down to what is now Indonesia. They went after fishing boats as well. The Japanese pirates were called Kaizoku or Wako and were based mainly on Kyushu, attacking the mainly Korean and Chinese merchant junks.

Some Europeans were drawn to the rich spice trading ships and also the fabulously wealthy "Black Ship" which trandsported the profits of the China-Japan trade back to Portugal but most were "privateers"-that is, they took a commision from the navy to operate in their country's interest as an unofficial naval ship. They were restricted to attacking their country's enemies, not whoever they felt like! One example is William Dampier, on the Cygnet, who charted some of the Australian coast while hanging around waiting for Dutch ships from Batavia (what is now Indonesia).

Not many pirates made it to the western shores of the Pacific, but I know Sir Francis Drake attacked Panama when it was held by the Spanish-the Spanish said he was a pirate, he said he was a privateer!

  3. Pirates were around the China sea. The only pirates were from England that would try to attack Spanish shipping from Southern California. That is it.
