  2. Apparently Stalin did speak english from sometime prior to WWII. An American war correspondent who covered the wartime Big Three conferences was surprised to find - during a post war interview - that Stalin was speaking with him in clear english. When asked about this, Stalin explained he had known the language since before the war. It was to his advantage, of course, that none of the other leaders (Churchill, FDR, Truman, etc)should know this. The correspondent's son discovered this in his father's papers several years later. The story was featured on NPR sometime in the 1980s, if I recall correctly.

  3. Actually several diplomats etc. have remembered that Stalin looked surprisingly intellectual and clever in closer view and he at least tried to speak in several languages.
