Question:

Did the Caps overpay for Mike Green?

Signed him to 4 years at 5.25 million per....way too much IMO for a player who had one great campaign, but still lacks skills in his own zone. Ahhh...well. Did they overpay him?

  1. No. In one or two years, he will be a better player than Brian Campbell. I would have locked this kid up for a longer term though...6 years at least. If he became a RFA I think he would have fetched at least a 6 million per offer and probably for a longer term than what Caps gave. Good job by Capitals locking up their 3 stars.. Semin, Ovechkin and Green. If they can Huet signed or get a new goalie, they should be set for a few years to come.

  2. No way. In 2 years this will be a bargain. Trust me.

  3. It's about right.  He was 7th in points by defensemen, and lead all defensemen in goals last season.  That's pretty impressive.

  4. Better that than have terms dictated to them through an offer sheet; you wouldn't want some team offering him 8 years at $7 million and having to swallow that chunk of cash.

  5. h**l NO!!! Worth every penny.  He is the QB of that team and up there in worth in terms of gaining the zone.  There is not any other D with slicker puck skills or raw scoring talent at such a young age in the NHL.  In terms of weakness in the defensive zone, they just pair him with some one who is more defensive minded to watch his back.  If Ovechkin sets other teams defenses on fire, Green is the spark that lights it!!!!

  6. no

  7. If they hadn't signed him he would have been gone to another team probably for more money.

They overpay everyone at this time of year, especially when the free agency group is made up mainly of mid-level players or old stars who are in decline ... so every team is in the same boat.

  8. Maybe they did, but salaries these days are high, even in the NHL.   Hopefully Uncle Ted is spending his money wisely this time and the Caps can get back into the playoffs and bring home Lord Stanley's Cup!!
