Super League champions Leeds Rhinos held off a second-half fightback to get the better of South Sydney 26-24 in their exhibition match in America.

The Rhinos led 26-0 at half-time thanks to tries from Matt Diskin, Brent Webb, Rob Burrow, Keith Senior and Scott Donald and three Kevin Sinfield kicks.

The under-strength NRL side, who are owned by actor Russell Crowe, came back into it after the break.

But the Rhinos defence held firm as they claimed victory in Jacksonville.

The match, held in front of a crowd of 12,500 supporters to celebrate Australia Day, came at the end of a 10-day training camp for the Rhinos in Florida.

"We are proud to be part of a great day for the game of rugby league," said coach Brian McClennan.

"To have 12,000 Americans turn out to watch a game, especially with the poor weather, is a massive boost for our game.
