Did the Olympic Opening Ceremony exacerbate global warming?

If so, could it have been done in a lower-impact way?

  1. Well, let's see today the temperature is in the mid 70's with bright sunny skies.  Last year at this time it would be very humid and warm.  So, no a spectacular fireworks display will do nothing to something that is not happening.

Boy, would Uncle Al love to get his hands on Chinese "carbon credits" he could pollute all he wanted!  Imagine a billion people paying into your little scam while you have no accountability to where the money goes.

  2. I hope not.  If you speak too loudly the lefties will want to sell carbon credits to the IOC.

  3. no more fireworks in the future.  I really don't like fireworks.  They begin from the early morning when they have something special for their life.  I wake up because of that sounds.

  4. I agree..."Wow... you guys are really nuts."

  5. compared to opening a new coal fired generating plant every week or 2?

    probably not.

  6. The Olympic opening ceremony had no effect upon solar activity (the driving force of climate change on this planet).

...and the whole point of the ceremony was to have a huge impact.  If we wanted "low-impact", we'd simply call off the games due to excessive sticks in the mud.

  7. Only if the co2 theory turns out to be correct. I'm sure the number of computers turned on looking at yahoo answers produced a h**l of a lot more co2.

  8. Jeeezzzus Christ, thats all I have to say about that question.

  9. Another thing worth mentioning is that Beijing forced half of its citizens to not drive the weeks preceding the olympics.  If only half or more people in the world put their vehicles aside everyday (or at least once a week). . .wouldn't things be so much better.

  10. As epic as the opening ceremony was, it didn't matter much compared global energy consumption and carbon emissions as a whole.

Something interesting I'd like to also point out.  All the fireworks probably produced a lot of atmospheric aerosol particles.  Right now, the biggest uncertainty in global climate change concerns aerosols.  Aerosols facilitate the formation of clouds, and clouds can either cool the planet by reflecting incoming solar radiation or warm the planet by trapping outgoing longwave radiation.  But, again, it's probably all small fry compared to the global picture.

  11. Wow... you guys are really nuts.

  12. No.  How about you GREENhorns just cut to the chance and call global warming the Devil.
