Did the Wings finally overpay someone?

Filppula gets 5yrs for 15mil with a 3mil a year Cap Hit! '

That leaves the Wings with around 800k left on their Cap and Quincey, Chelios and McCarty to sign! I see them moving a defenseman sometime before the season starts.

Who would you move?

Just not sign Chelios?

Would you move Lilja for a pick and free up 1.3mil so they have money to sign so they have enough to sign Quincey, Chelios and Mac?

Did they overpay for Filppula?

  1. Filpulla is gonna be a star, I've said it since the beginning, just watch.

But Detroit has the best front office in sports, everything is just gonna play itself out and everything will be fine in The Joe.

    Go Wings

  2. Glad they got this deal done before arbitration. Holland and Co. have botched a long term deal yet with young guns and it doesn't look to happen now. Great deal for both sides, but best of all, arbitration was avoided.

Keep in mind Kronwall was signed to a similar contract and look at the gem that's turning out to be. TBH, it looks like slight overpayment for this season, but this could turn out to be an absolute steal as soon as next season, and with any luck this year.

Something tells me Lilja is on the move. Holland did come straight out and say he was an insurance policy. With the signing of Stuart and the emergence of Kronwall, his hitting won't be as needed and we have other guys that are primed for the time.

  3. Is there another Filppula on Detroit ? Where are you getting 55 points from ? He had 36 pts last season and 17 before that...  I'd expect some improvement, but adding a further 19 points onto last season (already up 19 from the season before that) is asking a lot unless he is going to be getting far more ice time...

    Edit: Hossa is not overpaid.

  4. Mccarty is old, Chelios is old and Quincey should probably be signed, but still Filppula is a good player and if Mccarty and Chelios don't get a spot on your team it doesn't matter. Detroit does good every season because they sign young decent guys to long contracts and then eventually they end up getting Zetterberg for 2.7 million dollars when he is worth 8 million dollars. It was a good move and it is going to pay off in the near future. Of all the teams in the NHL nobody comes close to spotting talent and allowing that talent to grow like Detroit so you have to have trust because they know what they are doing.

  5. Yes but it is not Filppula.  His contract seems to be about fair market value for a 5 yr contract.  They may not have got the Wings discount on this one though.

The guy they overpaid is Hossa over 7 million for a less than a point a game guy.  Fortunately it will be only 1 year.  How much does Zetterberg and Franzen get next year.

This signing means 22 of 23 roster spots are filled. with 7 dmen already. Only room for 1 more- probably sign Quincy and let Chelios retire.  Mac ? may find a way but it means someone else gets cut.

  6. no filppula  will be playing in allstar games in a couple of years its a good sign

  7. I think Filps will continue to develop.  The type of player he is and the team he has around him almost gaurantee payback on his contract.  I think he is worth it, although I expected more along the lines of 2 mill a year.  However, had he not signed with Detroit, I think his contract would be worth even more than 3 mill per season.  Given more playing time in another town, I think his numbers would show his worth.  Right now, we have a lot of depth with similar roles being filled.  Still, I think he is a very valuable asset, and with his age in mind I think it would be wise to keep him.

I wouldn't have signed Chelios last season.  He will most likely stay with the organization, despite his storied history in both Chicago and Montreal.  Chicago, being his hometown, would be a likely destination for him after he retires, but he has put down roots in the Great Lake State as well, including the only other Chelly's Chili franchise other than the original in Chicago.  I would keep him around, because his mentoring is invaluable.  However, I'd like to keep a spot open, as well as cap space, on our roster.  He would mesh great with the front office, and already is.

Lilja needs to be traded.  His contract is worth more than his services, even if he signed with us cheap.  I would much rather resign Mac for a season and see how much progress he makes, and let guys like Quincey and Ericsson get the ice time that they need.  Both guys have great potential, and it's time we started developing our young defensive talent.  I would be very disappointed if Kyle Quincey isn't signed.  However, if somebody gives him an offer sheet, it would depend on the Wings' ability to match.

EDIT - Vinny, Nik Kronvall didn't just "turn out to be a gem", he was a first round pick.  The fact that he was injury prone until late has limited his development.

  8. Not at all, If it was a 1 or 2 year deal for 3 mil a season, then that would not be great.  But the 5 year deal is the important thing here.  For those who don't watch Detroit on a regular basis, Filppula has GREAT talent but just needs to keep getting more confident.  He is a great penalty killer, can play the PP.  He reminds me a lot of Pavel Datsyuk in his first few years.  Pavel is a playmaker first, and would rarely shoot because he had guys like Brett Hull and Brendan Shanahan around him.  Pavel has the talent to be that pure goal score type, but his playmaking abilities overshadow his great shot.  Filppula has shown flashes of brilliance in his two full seasons, with some really great goals, but he is still reluctant to shoot usually.  He should be a 60-70 point getter.

  9. I think they they got a good deal on Filppula because he hasn't reached his prime and I personaly think he is going to end up being a great player.

I think the Wings will be able to sign Cheli for a low contract because he said himself he wants lower playing time and just wants to stay to help the new players.  They will probably move Lilja and end up signing Quincey and maybe Mac.  However if we were to lose Cheli and Mac it wouldn't be a big lost because they wouldn't get as much ice time anyway.

  10. I haven't looked at the structuring of the deal, but I assume it is a straight 3 million a year instead of starting low and ramping up.  Overpaid is a harsher term than I want to use really.  I was expecting 1.5-2 per year, but I really can't complain about the length the Wings signed Filps to.  A 5-year deal for this guy is phenomenal for the team.

I would like/love to see the Wings move Lilja to free up cap room not to mention open the door for Ericsson to play some this year (although I know he will spend most of his time in GR, but I can dream).  Cheli isn't going to cost the team much, nor are Mac and Quiny.  If they can move Lilja they can probably sign all 3.  If not, we may see the end of Mac and Cheli.

3 mil/year won't look as bad when Filps puts up 50 points this year, and hopefully, like Holland said, about 70 on a consistent basis in a few years.
