Did the moon really come from the Earth? If it did, do you know which ocean it came from?

  1. At the time Earth formed 4.5 billion years ago, other smaller planetary bodies were also growing. One of these hit earth late in Earth's growth process, blowing out rocky debris. A fraction of that debris went into orbit around the Earth and aggregated into the moon.

giant impact hypothesis continues to be the leading hypothesis on how the moon formed. Is it right? Can it be disproven by more careful research? Only time will tell, but so far it has stood up to 25 years of scrutiny.

  2. although this was a popular rumor, it's not true.

the moon was actually formed out of Earth.

after the Big Bang, a celestial explosion in which planets and solar systems and galaxies were formed, a Mars-sized object struck Earth and a chunk of it broke off.

that chunk from Earth was attracted to Earth's gravitational pull, since Earth's excessive mass pulled it in.

then, that chunk, which we know as the moon, started to orbit the Earth, which it still does today.

  3. I have never heard this but it sure would be interesting!

  4. No, that's a hypothesis that was popular about 50 years ago(!)

The current theory (based on our latest knowledge of the composition of the earth and moon, and computer simulations) is that the earth was struck by a Mars-sized planet a few billion years ago, and the moon was formed out of the debris that splashed out of that collision.

Look up "origin of moon" in Google; and see this article: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon )

  5. The moon did not come from the earth's oceans as far as any research I've done.

    Hope I helped!
