Did the population of mankinds early ancestor really dip as low as 4000?

I read somewhere that one of mankind's early hominid ancestors had a population as low as 4000. I believe that this was before they left Africa. If anyone knows a web page or article about it could you include it please.

**This article says the population dipped as low as 2,000 due to an epidemic.  Hope this helps!
