Did the sprouts make me sick?

I wash rinse and drain all my sprouts at least twice a day and always taste them each time. I just started sprouting BIG beans, like black beans, red beans, navy beans last week. I been eating the bean part that is still attached to the top of sprout and some that are soft but didn't spout much, just softened. Some of the bean pods had turned sort of brownish looking while others were white. I wonder if the browninsh ones are spoiling? I thought they were just discolored from the husk. I woke up feeling nauseated and wonder if the sprouts made me sick.

  1. Not likely the sprouts had anything to do with feeling ill if you are growing them yourself especially if you are careful about draining them.

However, there are some things of which to be aware.

One is that you use pure water. If your tap water is iffy whether from a well or municipal supply then you'll probably want to at least filter it or use bottled water as the sprouts, beans especially are going to soak up the water and with it any contaminates it holds.

Second is that a couple beans are not good to eat raw. Limas and fava (broadbeans) should be cooked for safety even though sprouting changes the components of the beans and eating alfalfa that hasn't sprouted is iffy but most beans are probably just fine if just softened though to be sure it wouldn't hurt to lightly steam or cook another way.

Sprout People have a great site with lots of information and tips on growing sprouts of all kinds. There's lots of pictures too which are very helpful. On their dehulling page they mention that eating the hulls are just added fiber so it's your choice. They also have a Help Center with FAQs, a search function, and a help group.

Being nauseated can be caused by numerous things including several other things you might have eaten or even a virus.

Sprouts are a very healthy way to eat. Sprouted broccoli is even more nutritious and the enzymes of sprouts are many and beneficial. There's a lot of great things to do with sprouts as well so keep growing and enjoying.
