Question:

Did the story about the 44-lb cat make you angry?

The cat was found without a collar and is now at a shelter. http://www.nypost.com/seven/07302008/news/regionalnews/fat_cat_122221.htm

Shame on her owners. I saw a news video about her, and she can barely move. (And the idiot anchors on the newscast thought it was funny to make jokes about how she "needed a saddle".)

I hope a responsible cat owner gives this kitty a new life.

  1. That did make me mad! Just because its a fat cat doesnt mean you can make fun of it!!!

  2. My gosh people, animal cruelty?? There are so many far worse pet owners out there than this poor old woman. Atleast the cat was being fed. I would much rather see an over weight cat than a sickly malnurished cat. So what if he's overweight, other than that he looks like he has been well cared for.

  3. Yes it made me angry! This is definitely a case of animal cruelty! I just wish someone who knows the original owner would expose them so they get fined & whatever else! It's so obvious this poor thing was/is suffering! I just pray there is not much they need to do medically to get her on a nutritional path of health.

  4. It is disturbing that anyone would find this story funny, and the owner(s) should be fined for animal cruelty. Shame on the news anchors, who obviously, have become desensitized to such a disgusting account of animal cruelty and disregard for the cat's health.

  5. yeah, it was pathetic. whoever owned that cat knows they're wrong and should be punished if ever found.

  6. Never have been thrilled with the news media for this type of unfunny coverage and sensation mongering and fail to see the humour in the shelter-given name of "Princess Chunks" as obesity is just as tragic in animals as it is in humans.  At least they are going to address her health concerns and it is possible her family did lose her, although it may be a break for the unfortunate queen.

  7. I hate seeing fat animals like that.  It's so bad for them but I don't think people truly understand that.  I hope this cat finds a good home!

  8. It made me mad that a former owner allowed that situation to occur.  I thought the broadcast on CNN that I saw made too much light of it and the claim that the cat "has no problem except being overweight" was ridiculous.  I thought the shelter worker's statements about the cat were also silly.

I think they had an opportunity to teach the public about the dangers of obesity in animals and they missed it.  I'm glad the cat is in foster care and I am hopeful they will get the cat's weight down.

  9. Grrr!  Not only shame on the owners, but I'd like to shake a finger at the shelter too.  Maybe I'm wrong but I feel it would be better if they kept the poor kitty there until it lost weight, rather than trusting someone else to do it.

  10. No not really. The news anchor was just trying to tell a good story. That's what he gets paid for, not to do social commentary. The shelter worker was obviously nervous and people are not always at their best when they are nervous. She did say they were going to exercise her and also put her on a diet. Not much else she could have done in that short period of time. Anyway her goal was to find the owner or to get it adopted out. I think it is obvious to everyone that this is not a healthy state for this cat to be in. But first things first. Find her owner or get it adopted out and then deal with the weight. This will take many months to get the cat down to even close to a normal weight.

  11. YEAH IT DID!  Who would feed a cat food that's that bad for it?  please email me back at popstar1324@yahoo.com

  12. She did have a collar and ID Tag on, but she ate them.

  13. I am hoping that this poor cat actually ran away from her stupid owners.  Now she'll be able to find someone who can actually show her some care and love.

What is the shelter hoping to achieve by giving her such a stupid name?  Honestly, we can all see the poor cat is horribly overweight- let's not make grossly overfeeding your pets a joke.

I hope this kitty-cat gets a happy ending.

  14. i was pretty angry myself. it is amazing that people let their kitties get that big. i am sure that cat has a lot of health problems like diabetes, thyroid, and god knows what else. shame on them! if i could i would drive down there and adopt that kitty and make her healthy again!

  15. RuneAmok... thanks for starring this!

OH MY... thank goodness they found her.

However, I hope they don't kill her in the process by feeding her "low-fat Purina and 1 percent milk". O.O Are they kidding? Kibble and milk? *shaking head that a shelter thinks this is ok*

I sent a small donation to the shelter for her care, along with an email pointing them to http://www.catinfo.org/feline_obesity.ht...

Lets hope they take the information and her weightloss as seriously as it should be taken.

Edit to add... Dr. Pierson just emailed me about Princess Chunk. :o) She was very pleased with my email to the shelter. I had cc'ed her about helping PC lose weight. Lets hope they take appropriate action for the sake of this sweet little cat!

  16. Yes, from that perspective it makes me angry. It is animal abuse!

  17. its sad because the cat must be miserable. all that weight pulls on their back, so painful. but to her credit, the shelter worker did say chunk would be put on a low fat diet. i hope she doesn't return to the irresponsible owner unless they get educated about proper pet care and agree to follow up visits
