Did the tennis in the olympics used to be for ameteurs only?

My dad nd my granded both keeps sayin 'pros like rafa shouldnt win...it should be ameteurs' I dont get why tho cus all the other competitors are all professional...so did it used to be ameteurs or ...somethin??...confused :S

  1. The Olympic games used to be only amateurs full stop. This then changed.  Tennis is a relatively new olympic sport and it is only in the proffessional era.

    Wimbledon was only for amateurs in the 1960's but this also changed.


  2. Like the others said the entire Olympic used to be for Amatures, that is until the communists showed up with state trained and paid for Athletes that kicked everyones butts! Thats when everyone decided we need to see the the very best, regardless, compete to kick some butt.

  4. some events in olympics are strictly for amateurs only and some have professionals in it. look at boxing. i'm sure manny pacquaio and some other famous boxers would have gladly represent their country if only they were allowed.
